What to Expect in Depression Counseling

In counseling, you will have a non-judgmental space to discuss your feelings, thoughts, and daily struggles. You won’t need to explain why and how you get these feelings before starting. Your therapist will have regular sessions and help you understand your experiences over time.

Together, you and your therapist may:

Explore recent stressors and past experiences that affect your mood
Identify patterns in thoughts and behaviors that keep you feeling stuck
Build small, realistic steps that fit your current energy level
Strengthen your support system and coping strategies

What We Can Do Together

Clarity
Understanding your depression
We will evaluate how depression shows up and what might be the contributing factors to it. Understanding the pattern makes it easier to fix mood swings and intrusive thoughts.
Calmness
Soothing
You will learn to practice calmness through grounding exercises, breathing techniques, and different coping skills, which can help to 'reset' your mind during the day.
Relief
Easing Day-to-Day Symptoms
You will be equipped with tools to manage mood swings and heavy feelings. Even small changes in daily routine with coping skills can provide a sense of relief.
Connection
Strengthening Support
Depression often makes you want to pull away from others. In counseling, we can explore ways to reconnect with supportive people and communicate your needs more clearly and gently.
Hope
Reconnecting With What Matters
Counseling can help you remember or discover what gives your life meaning. Together, we will explore your values, interests, and goals and find realistic ways to move toward them.
Balance
Managing Stress
Stress is a big part of depression. Our therapists will help you work through stress and identify its source.

FAQ

Online Anxiety Therapy in New Mexico FAQs

Do I need a diagnosis of depression to start counseling?

Depression counseling does not need an official diagnosis. If you are struggling with mood swings and feel demotivated all day, it can be depression, and you should seek professional assistance.

Is counseling enough, or do I also need medication?

In many cases, counseling is enough, and no medication is needed. However, your therapist will decide if medication is required after examining your case.

What if I do not feel like talking much at first?

You are not alone; many who are suffering from depression don’t want to discuss what they are going through. Your therapist will gently move forward with your case at a pace you feel comfortable.

How long does depression counseling take?

The length of the therapy varies from one to another – usually we see clients for a few sessions at a minimum.
